To: Day Care Providers
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is working to ensure licensed and registered child care providers not only have an emergency preparedness plan but also have practice drills in the event of a natural disaster, and that they report the whereabouts and condition of children in their care after an evacuation.
Before an emergency, DFPS is asking child-care providers to review their emergency plans. To assist you in designing an effective emergency plan you may use the Emergency Preparedness Checklist Tool. This tool includes suggestions that exceed the minimum standards.
In the event of an impending disaster, DFPS will add a special hurricane or disaster information to the home page of the DFPS web site located at http://www.dfps.state.tx.us/ to provide information to child care providers. You will need to contact your local licensing office or State Wide Intake at 1-800-252-5400 within 48 hours to report relocation or any occurrence that renders all or part of your center unsafe or unsanitary for a child and/or Injury to a child in your care that requires treatment by a health-care professional. You must also notify us if you are adding to or reducing indoor or outdoor space, changing the age range of children, death of a child while in care, changing the hours, days, or months of operation, closing temporarily or going out of business.
Callers should follow the prompts to be connected to a State Wide Intake call taker where you will be asked a series of questions to verify the location and safety of children in care and the status of your operation.
